Hello!
I think we’ve all been here – started a series with the best of intentions, only to either a) forget about the series and not finish. b) lose interest and not finish. c) drowning in so many other books that you simply can’t reach the top TO finish or, d) all of the above.
Since I am in this huge HUGE funk (who isn’t right now?!) I’ve been brainstorming about what I could do about Getting My Groove Back. I thought about re-reading. I thought about just throwing out all the books on my TBR and starting over (this is a horribly SCARY idea) or you know, finishing a series.
But when I think about finishing a series, I get nervous because WHAT IF I DON’T REMEMBER THINGS and maybe, I HAVE TO REREAD THE ENTIRE SERIES. Which is fine if it’s a trilogy but some aren’t and who has time for that!?Β
Or maybe the series I want to read isn’t DONE YET and it’s been 16 YEARS *looking at you, J.R. Ward*Β Or I don’t know, I can’t find them? That’s a stretch, but hey.
Anyway. I wanted to talk about a few series that I have not finished, but want to.
(in no particular order)
So. Imagine being frozen. On a spaceship, heading off to another planet. Then imagine, waking upΒ XXX amount years later (think centuries) which is actually AHEAD of schedule and living on a spaceship! YEP! Plus, secrets and romance and scientifically altered THINGS and Beth has a habit of killing her characters. *takes a breath* Why haven’t I finished?
I don’t even know.

Ah, POE! My man. (not really)
Seriously, I read Nevermore, like, 5 years ago and loved it. I remember ZERO details, just the main plot points. Honestly, the main reason I didn’t continue this series was because…
… because…
I don’t know, okay?
Seriously, I really don’t. But I do know that by the time Oblivion came out, it had been a LOOONG ass time and one could not find the time for a re-read. But I really loved the first one. π
(Random, I recently met Kelly and she is super sweet! I wanted to ask her if her dreams are full of Poe but didn’t have the nerve.)

Mara Mara Mara.
I’ve read the first two – again, another series I remember major plot points but details are sketchy. I do remember being confused 98.9999% of the time but loved it anyway. I also clearly remember thinking Mara had some seriously odd things going on upstairs (if you know what I mean.)
But two years between books 2-3 is a long wait and well. Time. (I do remember hearing there was a reason but yeah. I don’t remember what it was.)Β

NOW, here’s a series I can talkΒ more about.
Earth & Sky was such a fun book, with aliens and time travel and all KINDS of great things. I was a little let down because REASONS by The Clouded SkyΒ (which takes place on a spaceship and not Earth), and it’s why I haven’t finished the series.
Howeverrrrrrrrrr. Something HUGE (I mean, HUGE) happens at the end of The Clouded Sky that I must find out about. I will be finishing this series SOON!

Across the Universe and Nevermore are two that I read and enjoyed but never finished. I remember NONE of the details or plot points so I can’t continue without rereading and THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER BOOKS!!
I haven’t read anything by Megan Crewe but she’s on my list of authors to try!

Definitely finish Across the Universe! It’s great.
I do recommend rereading Nevermore though before you finish the series. That series suffered from too much time between books so when I finally picked up Oblivion it was like being thrust into something willy-nilly. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I probably could have.
I haven’t read ANY of these! I have seen the Mara Dyer ones and was intrigued by the covers. I’ll definitely add them to my TBR now. I’m currently (very slowly) working my way through the Throne of Glass novels. Relying on my library means I have to wait two months or more between books… Have you read them?

I haven’t finished the Mara series either. I read the first book forever ago and then never got around to reading the next book. There are so many series I haven’t finished, but want to. I have such a short attention span I just always get distracted and I have such a terrible memory I can never remember anything π

Sooo I haven’t read any of these. LOL. But I do want to read Mara Dyer! I’ve heard great things about it overall.

This post right here is exactly why I don’t read series unless all books have been released or the final book will be released within a month or so. For all the reasons you listed, no matter how good the first or second books are I will eventually either forget about the series or loose interest! I also don’t re-read books and I do read back to back to back books, always, so no matter how fabulous something is the details will start getting a little fuzzy even a month later. With that being said, the only series you have above that I’ve read is Mara Dyer and I’m not sure if I’m a good judge to tell you if you should read the last book or not! I absolutely LOVED the first 2 books but only thought the last book was Ok. I was actually a little disappointed in where she took the story, I was hoping for some dark twisted reason for everything & instead I felt the outcome was a little PG for my tastes, does that make sense? Anyways, I do remember having to skim a bit in the beginning due to there being a re-cap of what had taken place already so you’d probably be fine reading it. Great post!

Oh goodness, I haven’t read any of those series! But there are a lot of series I haven’t finished — mostly dystopian because I am worried about the ending being so crappy that is ruins the series for me! Great post!!

Shades of Earth is the best book in the Across the Universe series, IMO! I was holding my breath as I raced through the last few chapters of this book!!! π
i want to read the across the universe trilogy π i have been curious about it π mara dyer trilogy a bit too, but dont know if i will.. now the megaw crewe trilogy i read her other series the fallen world and loved it,(i read the books from the library, and still need to read the fourth book which is what happens after some years from the end of book 3), and i still need to buy copies of all 4 books) now this trilogy here,im curious about too, and now that u talk about im even more curious, i need to see if the library has them π i usually just complete books series, bc i tend to read book 1 and than i read book 3 and so on, or i read book 1 and than i read a sequel to another series, and after i continue with the book 2 of other series..i try to read them all after each other so i dont forget details.. unless the book hasnt come out yet, in which case i wait to start the series.. one trilogy i think im not going to finish is kiss of deception i read the first book, but i dont feel like read the sequel and third book (they are both super big, and i kinda already forget some parts of book 1,and im also nto a big fan of fantasy..)
I actually haven’t read any of these books but Mara Dyer is definitely on my TBR because it sounds really creepy and fascinating! I’ve heard great things about Nevermore but now when I look at it years later it doesn’t really appeal to me much. There are so many series I need to finish but I think I just look at new books a lot of the time. Great post!

Dying because I haven’t even STARTED any of these, but I own most of them hahahha. One of the series I want to finish this year is… well, lots of them because I have a lot to finish. The Raven Cycle for sure though! Start Red Rising? Put everything aside and get to The Winner’s Kiss? SO many things, really. Series are always a struggle!
Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight recently posted…Bookish Movie Review: Allegiant
Oooo…The Winner’s Kiss is a good choice because it’s the finale of a great series, right? But you also need to read the Red Rising series VERY soon!! π It’s FABULOUS!!!!! π
I feel you girl. This is my biggest thing about series. I am so afraid I won’t remember things as clearly as I would like, so I feel like I automatically should reread the other books and THEN finish. Mara Dyer is a series I binged early last year and guess what? I don’t remember a damn thing about it. And I read all three! So that one might be tricky to do without rereading.
I haven’t read Beth Revis’s or Megan Crewe’s, but I do want to!

I wasn’t a fan of the last Mara book. I thought the first 2 were much stronger and the ending just didn’t do the creepy build-up of the whole series justice π The one thing that is good about it is that the last book has the same writing style– so it’s easy to get into and get completely INTO it. If that makes any sense.
I’m actually really weird in that I’m really good at finishing series. I don’t start a ton of them though, so that’s probably why. But it just seems like I always really want to know what’s going to happen!!

Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction recently posted…Bite-Sized Reviews from My Favorite Aussie Author – C.J. Duggan (and a Cover Reveal!)
Girl, you know I suck at series. I’ve NOT finished more than I’ve finished at this point I think. And it has NOTHING to do with how I’d enjoyed the previous books and everything to do with the brutal wait between releases. Mara Dyer is a good example of that one. I even reread the first two books leading up to the (supposed) release of the third and final book, but then it got pushed back months and I got annoyed. I bought it. I’ll read it one of these days. The Bloodlines series is another great example. I freaking loved Sydney and Adrian. Yet the final book was released and, despite even pre-ordering it, I’ve yet to read it. (I think it’s been over a year since it released.) That one I pushed off not even as much because of the wait but because I don’t want the series to end.
And, if I’m being totally honest here, a certain series-ending book by a certain author with the initials VR that RUINED MY LIFE definitely impacted how I feel about series. Since then, I’ve had even LESS interest in finishing some of my most beloved series because if they would happen to go the way that one did, there’s a good chance I’d never read again. (Slightly overly-dramatic? Maybe. Dishonest? Not really.)
