On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.
A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.
She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.
Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.
Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.
Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?
I received this book for free from The Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
In the world of paranormal, Vampires are one of my favorite to read about. Whether they are horrific, mindless creatures. A politically organized group hiding in plain sight, or in this case, separated from the world, living out their existence in isolation. A Shade of Vampire was different, separating itself from all the other Vampire novels with its eerie setting and fantastic world building. Original as it may be, it isn’t perfect and could have been so much better if it was longer.
We have alternate POV between Sofia and Derek. It was easy to distinguish between the two voices. The story is fast paced but never you leaves you hanging in the slightest. I love the concept of the Shade, where the sun never shines and Vampires live their existence in hiding. I wasn’t a fan of the human slaves, because well, that’s a tough subject for me to handle. It was handled well though and I wasn’t completely uncomfortable with the idea. There wasn’t too much elaboration on the history of the Vampires. Which for me, is something that I need and really enjoy learning about. There is also a prophecy mentioned regarding Derek, which gives us enough hints as to his purpose but enough left out for us to keep guessing.
Sofia is a smart, brave and defiant girl. She’s scared and confused (who wouldn’t be?!) but she continues to jut her chin up and stand up to those who try to intimidate her. Even in her situation, she is selfless and loving. Derek, on the other hand, was a pansy ass. Sorry, but it’s hard to buy into the remorseful Vampire. He has been in a spell induced sleep for 400 years and after awakening, takes hold of the Coven. He has an instant taking to Sofia, with her beauty and defiance. He wasn’t one to torture or kill like his brother, Lucas, but is scary in his own right. He’s very protective of Sofia, with the whole “she it mine” bit.
I’m still undecided if their relationship would be insta love, Stockholm syndrome or either. Once Derek took her under his wing and protection, she wasn’t treated as a prisoner but yet, she still was one. I appreciate the fact that she was aware of her feelings and at times, felt guilty. She also was aware of the fact that should she fall for him, she wouldn’t leave and return home. That’s a heavy decision to make.
I loved the action scenes and the horror of it all. You can’t have Vampires with no blood, guts or maiming, ya know!? There was also a twist thrown in that had me reeling. The ending left me pissy and confused. It’s a cliffhanger, an evil one, and I want to KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!!
Overall- Although I feel that this one could have been a good bit longer, I really enjoyed it. Eerie and face paced, I recommend it for all Vampire fans.
