Does the cover matter?
You’ve heard it a thousand times – I’m sure you’ve even said it someone else a time or two –
Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Oh, but I do. I can’t helllllllllp it. I know that I shouldn’t be superficial and skip on a book because the cover is WEIRD, or let’s face it, UGLY. But when browsing books at a book store, or looking at books on Amazon, I would say that the cover has at least 50% sway on whether or not I buy a book. This is of course, if the book is NEW TO ME.
There are also times when I get review requests, and the book sounds interesting enough, but then I see the cover. I can’t even describe the disappointment that succumbs me*. Or when on Netgalley or EW.. I mean, the cover is usually what stands out, right?
I also find myself skipping reviews/blog tours/guest post because the cover on the Featured Image is less than appealing. I just automatically think I won’t like it. This does depend on the genre of the book too, and which blog it is, but by general rule, if it’s unappealing…
I know, it’s awful.
Yet, the same can be said for pretty covers! I can’t even tell you how many times I purchased a book based on the cover alone and book was…. well, not good. I wanted to love it because the cover was amazing. There are books I had never heard of are now all the sudden on my radar and it’s the cover that did it! It’s like I’m a moth to a flame…
So, yes. I Judge a Book by its Cover.
Gosh, I sound like a superficial cow.
*I have never turned down a review request because of a cover.
How about you? Do you often find yourself judging a book by it cover?
How often are you draw to a book, or hesitant to read one – because of its cover?
