Have you been wanting to start practicing yoga at home, but you’re not sure how, or where, to start. Or, what, if anything, you might need?
Yeah, I know exactly how you feel!
As a novice myself, I know just how overwhelming it can be to decide on what yoga practice to start with, how often to practice, and what to get before getting started.
I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way. I actually hurt myself once trying to complete a yoga flow of a VERY advanced practice I honestly shouldn’t have been trying to do! Since then, I’ve purchased courses, watched (a lot) of free YouTube videos, and I also downloaded a few apps.
I’ve learned a lot along the way; what works & what doesn’t. What you REALLY need to get started. That’s why I want to share with you this quick beginner’s Guide to Yoga, so you can make the smart & safe decisions to start practicing Yoga at home with confidence!
Helpful Tips For Beginner’s Wanting to Practice Yoga at Home

But first, What is Yoga?
Yoga is a spiritual, mental, and physical practice that originated in India. Initially, it was passed from teacher to student; before it was cataloged by the sage Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras.
The purpose of Yoga is to create a union between your body, mind, and spirit. While there have been many styles developed over the years, most still share the same goal of achieving complete wellness and spiritual awakening.
Yoga is practiced for a variety of reasons, for physical and mental wellness, and as I stated above, used for spiritual awakening. It’s not a practice to take up lightly, and I highly recommend researching the history of Yoga for a better understanding of its abilities.

See Your Medical Provider Before Starting a Yoga Program
As with any fitness or wellness program, you should at least consult, if not see, your medical provider before you start practicing yoga at home.
Although Yoga is a practice many individuals use for medical, mental, and spiritual reasons, there are some conditions that may hinder your ability to practice safely at home alone, and not in a controlled environment.
Having the Right Clothes for Yoga
Yoga pants, anyone?
Yes, what you wear makes a HUGE difference in your practice. No, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on top-notch fitness and yoga gear, as I did sadly, but you don’t want to be practicing Yoga in jeans, either.
Your clothes should fit snug, but not too tight it’s restricting, and be a fabric that is breathable. Most Yoga pants (leggings) and shorts are made with polyester and spandex. They shouldn’t ride up your abdomen, or slid down, either.
You also, don’t want to be wearing a loose t-shirt that could slide and gather. This is why I recommend a snug tank top paired with a sports bra or just the bra itself.
Speaking of sports bras, do yourself a favor and invest in a GOOD one!
No shoes are required! You should be doing Yoga barefoot. Also, if you have long hair, it’s best to tie it up so it doesn’t get in your face!

Find the Right Yoga Program for You
Remember how I mentioned I injured myself? Yeah, that was because I was trying an advanced practice I wasn’t anywhere near conditioned enough to be doing.
There are many different TYPES and STYLES of yoga, such as Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Yoga, & Yin Yoga, just to name a few. In addition, there are different levels of difficultly, and programs that are designed for specific individuals and specific goals.
Basically, there’s a lot of options out there.
What I recommend for a beginner, is this Basic Beginner Yoga Program. This program is designed for beginners and will provide the tools to develop an understanding of yoga, instruction on poses and alignment, and a worksheet to help you go at your own pace.
What makes this program great, is that it has detailed instructions and is specifically designed for beginners. You won’t be making the mistake I did and jumping into a practice that is too advanced.
Make Sure You Have Your Yoga Accessories
Starting out, you may not need blocks, pillows, or any additional accessories, but you DO need a yoga mat.
A Yoga mat is specifically designed and fabricated to prevent your feet, hands, and other body parts from slipping. Thus, in turn, prevents injury. Before you get to practicing Yoga, make sure you have a mat set up and ready to go! They’re very affordable and can be found at fitness stores, Target, and Walmart too.
Setting Up The Perfect Space for Your Yoga Practice
There are some beautiful Yoga spaces out there, let me tell you! I often browse Pinterest with a touch of envy. But, don’t be put off by some of these elaborate Yoga spaces and studios; they may be nice, but they aren’t required!
That being said, you do want to make sure you have an ample amount of space to move. This could be your living room, bedroom, or office. Seriously, it doesn’t have to be fancy at all!
I do recommend being in a quiet area, so you are able to concentrate on your movements, listen to your body, and relax while doing your practice. It makes all the difference!
