Growing up in a house of female morticians, Lily Graves knows all about buried secrets. She knows that perfect senior-class president Erin Donohue isn’t what she seems. She knows why Erin’s ex-boyfriend, hot football player Matt Houser, broke up with her. And she also knows that, even though she says she and Matt are just friends, there is something brewing between them—something Erin definitely did not like.

But secrets, even ones that are long buried, have a way of returning to haunt their keeper.

So when Erin is found dead the day after attacking Lily in a jealous rage, Lily's and Matt’s safe little lives, and the lives of everyone in their town of Potsdam, begin to unravel. And their relationship—which grew from innocent after-school tutoring sessions to late-night clandestine rendezvous—makes them both suspects.

As her world crumbles around her, Lily must figure out the difference between truth and deception, genuine love and a web of lies. And she must do it quickly, before the killer claims another victim.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

With the mixed reviews surrounding this one, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and I was hesitant to start. I am glad I went with it because this was REALLY good.

After the death of Erin, the towns little miss perfect, Lily and Erin’s boyfriend, Matt, are blamed simultaneously at first for her suicide, than later ruled murder. Determined to clear her and Matt’s name, and not to mention, solve the murder herself, Lily sets off to find the clues to who Erin really was, and find the killer before she is next.

I love murder mysteries. I love dissecting every aspect of the novel, looking to find the smallest of clues that could lead me to the killer. And while the clues were there the entire time, I could not figure out who the killer was. It was mind-boggling. It was obvious to me, who the killer wasn’t, because some of the suspects were just TOO obvious. Yet at the same time, I continued to go back and forth between several different people.

Lily is such a fun and hilarious character. She is different (of course) but I love how she owns it. Growing up in a funeral home will do that, yeah? She is very resourceful and determined too. I can’t decide if the information she learned about the case was ALL TOO CONVENIENT, the cops have loose lips or if she was just really that good at finding clues. Probably the first two, but whatever. Initially, I thought her denial at Matt’s possible involvement was pretty dense and love-sick like behavior, but all in all, I think it’s because she is loyal to him. To all she loves, really.

As far as the romance goes, it’s existence is minuscule. Which is fine with me. Of course, we get a better look into the build up of Lily’s feelings for Matt in flashbacks – which I loved – but the romance as a whole doesn’t overtake the book. The only downfall to that is since the romance is pretty non-existent, it was hard to understand Lily’s loyalty to him (see above). So I do think that as the reader, I would have understood more, had there been more? I don’t know how to explain it.

My Peeve –

There were times when I felt like Lily’s progress in the case was way too convenient.

Overall –

I loved it! The Secrets of Lily Graves is a well written mystery that will keep you on your toes and questioning every characters involvement. I highly recommend this one.

I am usually pretty good about figuring things out too. Which is why I was so surprised I couldn’t figure it out!

YES it is! And there are times when it’s like that, but didn’t really hinder my enjoyment overall

Yeah, I was nervous about it. But maybe that was better since I had lower expectations? who knows haha
