Today, I want to talk about sharing content on social media. Not YOUR content, the posts that you read, silly. That is what those icons are there for right? But first, I want to discuss briefly about the importance of having YOUR OWN social media icons displayed on your blog; which are used for your readers to get in touch with you on other platforms..
Having social media icons on your side bar (with WORKING links, I might add) is a MUST for all blogs, in my opinion. I click on them all the time when I stumble on other blogs, especially when I want to
stalk visit their Twitter/Instagram/Facebook. These are important for contacting the blogger – and another way for those readers to follow you elsewhere. So even if you aren’t on Twitter, Instagram or have a Facebook, I still recommend having an email icon or Goodreads. For us lazy folks that don’t want to search for your ABOUT ME, CONTACT ME page, ya know?
I have seen many blogs that don’t have them AT ALL or just displayed in a funky area. In my opinion, it’s OKAY to have them in more than one place. Maybe not right next to each other – but on a side bar and maybe below your header or on a footer menu is good. There should be at least one spot that is easily visible, on both web and mobile devices. And check the links!
Now, those those social media icons BELOW content for sharing.
These are easy to display below your content, whether it’s on specific pages or posts or ALL of them. There are also many plugins for WP users as well. I recently installed SumoMe – which displays those sharing icons on the left – to see how often my content is being shared (among other things). So far, the “share” count is a lot lower than I thought it would be. So this got me thinking;
How often are these SHARE ICONS actually used? And Are they worth having?
Personally, I share content from other blogs a lot, especially if it’s a post I loved and/or think others would enjoy too. I try to be cautious about it, because sharing too much too soon labels you a “spammer” which is why I will sometimes schedule a tweet on Hootsuite with the link. I was also a member of Triberr (okay, technically I am still a member) which is a group of other bloggers that load their feed for sharing posts on social media. However, the hype surrounding that died off rather quickly. I would say only 1 of 5 people that are still “members” actually share content on a regular basis.
Ironic thing is – the “Top Referrers” to my blog over the past 60 days has been social media. So, is that from ME sharing, or are other people sharing and I am not aware of it? It’s hard to track – hence the SumoMe plug in. But I digress.
I do think in the grand scheme of things – it IS worth having below your content. 1 share is 1 share you didn’t have before, right?
- Do you have share icons below each post? If not, why not?
- Do you think they are important to have?
- (After voting if you’re comfortable) Share your answer in the comments!
