Coming home is hard for Lane. Hard because her beloved uncle Harry has died suddenly, but also because of him. Kale.

Kale Hunt has been her best friend since childhood. But it was never that simple. He was Lane’s reason for leaving home and moving to New York. Seeing him with someone else, in love with someone else, shouldn’t have hurt. But it did. It really, really did. So she upped sticks and left, started a new life and cut herself off from her past.

But now she’s back and all the feelings are right there. As if she had never left.

Emotions are running high, and tragedy has a funny way of bringing people together. But is Lane reading the signs right? Are they still just friends, or is there something more?

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

My Thoughts:

Let me just break the ice and say that I don’t consider myself to be an emotional person; let alone reader. It takes a lot to move me and takes even MORE to make my cry. Let me tell you… The looks I got while listening to this book during rush hour traffic (morning and evening) are some of these most sympathetic, and painfully embarrassing looks I’ve ever received.

To say I was UGLY crying, would be an understatement.

This book just… tore me UP! It was so hard to listen to at times, and I did have to hit pause to get my bearings. But it’s so good you guys. SO. GOOD. What made this book so emotional for me? In a word – everything.

Until Harry is told in Lane’s POV, shortly after hearing about the death of her Uncle Harry, and dates back to when Lane is 6 years old, leading up the events in present time. I didn’t realize at first how much of these flashbacks would play a part, but it was at least 50% of the book, and I loved it. I also didn’t realize how many different elements of the story were missing in the beginning, and as they weave together, it paints a picture that is devastating, as it is beautiful.

I adored Lane. Although at first, I thought her running and leaving was a cowardly, selfish thing to do. But really, she is probably the strongest person in the book. It’s hard to know your own breaking point, and limits, and for her to know, and to do what was best for her to protect herself? That takes courage. And the strength that a lot of people just might not have.

Although there are romantic elements in the story, this felt to me more of a journey of a young girl and all the terrible, but also happy things, she went through that made her the woman she is today. Lane discovers things about herself, her friends and her family, that she must cope with, and it makes for one emotional ride. But it’s worth every tear.

As for the narration? Best. Ever. I don’t think there could have been a better narrator suited for Lane, and the story as a whole. Heather captured all the emotion behind the story and I loved every minute.

Seriously, get this book. Read it. Experience it. And hopefully, you will love it as much as I did.
