Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: she lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennett has the unique ability to travel through time and space, which brings him into Anna’s life, and with him a new world of adventure and possibility.
As their relationship deepens, the two face the reality that time may knock Bennett back to where he belongs, even as a devastating crisis throws everything they believe into question. Against a ticking clock, Anna and Bennett are forced to ask themselves how far they can push the bounds of fate, what consequences they can bear in order to stay together, and whether their love can stand the test of time.
Fresh, exciting, and deeply romantic, Time Between Us is a stunning, spellbinding debut from an extraordinary new voice in YA fiction.
Time travel. Hello, awesome.
Honestly, I was nervous about this one because time travel –as awesome as it sounds– also seems extremely difficult to comprehend. Granted, I haven’t read too many time traveling books so I don’t have much to compare too but Time Between Us was so well written, fascinating and just beautiful and I couldn’t get enough!
After encountering a mysterious boy –who disappears– one morning while on a jog, Anna’s life is thrown into a tails spin. Bennett, the new boy at school, is the one she saw that morning. Although he denies being there, Anna is sure of it and continues to be intrigued by Bennett. After a robbery gone wrong, Anna learns about Bennett’s ability and the two grow closer and start a relationship.
The writing was beautiful; I was drawn from page one in complete awe. There is so much about this book to love. The sweet, butterfly inducing romance, the complex yet fascinating concept of time travel. The small mysteries behind particular events. There were a few times that I had to re read something because it seemed like it went right over my head (a scene in particular where Bennett is walking Anna home)– but for the most part, it was pretty easy to understand. The “rules” for traveling were explained in detail but not to which was overwhelming. To me, this is a “small details” kind of book. You MUST pay attention to the smallest things. They are crucial in understanding…a lot.
Anna is such a strong and like-able girl. I do think her acceptance of the time traveling was pretty quick– then again, she had all the proof she needed. She’s loyal, loving and just wants to experience life outside of her proverbial box. The relationship between Anna and Bennett is one of my favorites. As you see them fall in love and grow, you can’t help but get attached to the two and hope they can overcome all their obstacles.. Bennett is so good to Anna. Knowing about her dreams to travel; he takes her to places she could only dream of. He did everything in his power to make her happy, even against his OWN wishes and you can’t help but admire that. He’s sensitive and protective and I love that he gave Anna the choice to continue their relationship.. You have this feeling of dread almost the entire book because it just doesn’t seem plausible that their relationship could ever work. Not to mention, these words from Bennett;
“I don’t stay…anywhere. I visit. I observe. I leave. I don’t ever stay.”
Cue heartbreak, yes?
After one event in particular; I was really hoping they wouldn’t change what happened. The butterfly effect and all that. Something small or huge can change when doing their “do-over” and I was pretty anxious after they did. And not at all surprised at the outcome. Bennett caved too quickly too. I get he wants to make Anna happy and do what he can for her– it just.. I don’t know. Maybe I am more upset about Anna trying to abuse this gift?
There are a few things I wished we had a little more explanations on. After finishing, my mind was whirling with questions that weren’t answered.
Overall- Time between us is going on my favorites shelf. So unique, complex and fascinating, I can’t wait for book two, Time After Time. I HIGHLY recommend this.
