Anna Boyd almost lost her life to get what she wanted most in the world: freedom.
But just when it seems that her family has finally escaped Witness Protection, the illusion that Anna could resume a normal life comes crashing down.
The deadly man Anna knows as Thomas is still on the loose, and now he's using her as a pawn in a dangerous game with the drug cartel determined to silence her forever. When Thomas and a mysterious masked man capture not only Anna but also her fragile younger sister and her boyfriend, Anna decides it's time to break all the rules-even if it means teaming up with the lesser of two evils.
Anna will do whatever it takes to protect the people she loves and win her life back once and for all. But her true enemies are hidden in plain sight. Before long, Anna will learn that putting her trust in anyone may be the last mistake she ever makes.
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The Rules for Breaking is an extremely suspenseful and quick read. Initially, I didn’t know the which direction the story was going to go, since things were “wrapped up” at the end of The Rules for Disappearing, save for that surprising end. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than it’s predecessor.
First of all, I loved how well Ashley summarized the events from the first book. I am usually pretty good about remembering events from previous books in a series, but for some reason there were many details that were escaping me. It doesn’t take long for you to catch up and have it all coming back though. Also, I loved “the rules” that were placed at the beginning of every chapter.
This picks up shortly after where The Rules for Disappearing left us. Things seems be to going well for Anna and her family, until the reappearance of Thomas, the assassin that let her live. Ethan, Teeney and Anna are kidnapped, and Anna finds out there is more to this deadly game then she initially thought.
There were so many things going on here! I was never able to catch a break (nor Anna, for that matter) before things would intensify and more twists would appear. I was definitely on my toes trying to piece everything together, and once I thought I did? NOPE.
Anna (previously Meg) has always been a strong character but I think she has really come into her own here. She is still nervous, doesn’t trust ANYONE and wants to save others before herself. There were times I got a little frustrated that she wasn’t open with Ethan, but I don’t blame her. Their relationship is sweet and I adore these two together. You know just from the lengths they go to protect each other.
My Peeve –
Honestly, there is nothing that immediately jumps out at me that bothered me.
I really liked it! The Rules for Breaking was an intense read. Suspenseful, full of twists and strong, likable characters. I highly recommend this one.
