Ignazio Vitale is not a good man.
I suspect it, the first time I see him, sense the air of danger that surrounds the man. He has a way of commanding attention, of taking control, of knowing what I'm thinking before I even do.
It's alarming and alluring. It's dark and deadly. It's everything I've ever wanted but the last thing I truly need. Obsession.
It doesn't take him long to draw me into his web, charming me into his bed and trapping me in his life, a life I know nothing about until it's too late. He has secrets, secrets I can't fathom, secrets that make it so I can't walk away, no matter how much I beg him to let me go. I see it sometimes in his eyes, a darkness that's both terrifying and thrilling. He's a monster, wrapped up in a pretty package, and what I find when I unmask him changes everything.
I want to hate him.
Sometimes, I do.
But it doesn't stop me from loving him, too
I received this book for free from The Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The minute I heard about this book, I knew I had to read it. I feel in love with J.M.’s writing in Extinguish, and I was beyond excited to see where she was going to take me next. I was not disappointed.
Karissa is a freshman in college, when she meets the sexy, charming and much older Naz. She is instantly attracted to him, by not only his looks but his confidence and mysterious persona. Soon, their relationship takes off on a tails spin but not everything is what it seems with Naz. Slowly over the course of the novel, we learn about Naz, his past life and just how NOT good of a man he really is.
What I love most about her writing is how much depth she gives her characters and situations. I have always been one to believe that not everything is black and white, and she really brings the gray out for several situations. You have to take a step back and think, “wait, what?!” And as I said in my Goodreads mini review;
“Her words are powerful, and she releases the veil of what’s right and wrong and what’s good and bad. Making you question what you believed before.”
Truly, she is an amazing writer.
With how Karissa grew up, I am not at all surprised she was attracted to the danger of Naz. Her mother was beyond paranoid, moving constantly and sheltering Karissa to the extreme. She isn’t stupid, either. She came off naive, sure, but she knew something wasn’t ALL THERE, the whole time. I don’t think she picked up on the severity of it until shit really shit the fan though. It’s one of those situations where you question if ignorance is bliss, ya know?
Naz really opened her up to life and herself. Both are passionate and complicated people, but so different. Where Naz was confident, Karissa is timid, and watching the change and mold, while opening her eyes around her was a beautiful thing. Don’t get me wrong, there are parts of their relationship that I think are NOT healthy, but again, it’s a large field of gray. The sex was hot too. 😉
Naz is one of those characters where you hate one minute, love the next. He’s a very complicated man, with layers upon layers to unravel. For the most part, he was very open with Karissa. Did he come out and say things straight out? Hell no. But he never lied.
I loved all the twists and turns the book took in the last 15-20% or so. It’s when all the pieces started to click into place and I was honestly floored. I was a little put off by one thing at the end, with something that Karissa did. She wasn’t being rational, and she jumped into something without thinking it through. It was brave but very freaking stupid, considering.
My Peeve –
My one peeve was how slow the book was at times. It was a necessary evil, but there were times when I thought things were too repetitive.
Absolutely freaking LOVED. Monster in His Eyes is full of suspense, well written complex characters that you can’t help but love and get invested in. I highly recommend!
