Leukemia’s been my life since I was eleven. Now, six years later, I want my life back. Only I’m not sure what that is.
The test results came back today. 22,000. Which means I’m officially out of remission—again.
I have three options:
1. Another round of chemo.
2. A super-new experimental drug.
3. Dump it all— forget the meds and treatments and enjoy the time I have left.
I think I know what I want.
Then, in walks Damian, changing everything.
I mean, everything.
He’s got his own set of issues. It binds us together, you know? We understand what it’s like to lose what matters most in seconds.
Still, the last thing I need is to have someone else to crush if I can’t fight hard enough. And the last thing he needs is someone else to grieve.
Never mind. I’m down to two options now.
Somehow I know that whichever one I choose, the result will be the same. With the sand in my hourglass seeping to the bottom, I hope there’s enough left to show Damian that life’s worth living. Worth fighting for.
Worth dying for.
I can’t say what it was, initially, about his book that just pinched the heart-strings and forced me to buy it. But I did and I have no regrets. This book will tear you apart, lift you up and then shred you all over again.
Kate has been battling cancer for years, when she gets the news she is out of remission. The treatment plan is more aggressive than those prior, and she comes to terms with the plan and the possibility of it’s failing. When she meets Damian.
Of all the things that Kate has been through, and is currently going through, she is such a strong girl. I admired her strength; not only physically having to go through chemo again, but her inner strength. She has insecurities, sure, but she never lets them REALLY drag her down. She wants friends, prom, just… NORMAL. But she always puts others first. Since she is older, I love how her parents let her take control over her treatment and letting her decide the course of action.
Damian was hard to really get a grasp on at first. He would be sweet; going out of his way to make Kate smile or do something special for her, to pushing her away the next. I love how he challenges Kate, making her really think about her choices, her family and her life. He is dealing with issues himself, and learns a lot about himself, and his relationship with his father from Kate too.
The romance. These two went through so much together. As I said, Damian isn’t the best of guys, and although Kate knows this, she knows there is a reason. She helps him cope, breaks down his walls and challenges him too. But their highs were just SO SWEET. I think knowing one of the possible outcomes to their story, you adore their private moments even more. They are definitely one of my favorite couples.
What I loved the most about this book was the writing. King does an amazing job handling such a heartbreaking scenario. I love the diary entries the most. It gives you a better perspective into Kate’s mind, and how she deals with her situation as whole and all the small, minuscule things we take for granted or don’t pay any mind to. My only issues with the writing is View Spoiler » We didn’t get Damian’s POV until later, and I wish we could have the whole book. « Hide Spoiler
The Ending. *sobbing* The last 7-8 chapters are hard to read as it is, for REASONS, but the very end had me sobbing. There was also a slight twist (for lack of a better word) towards the end that had my heartbreaking all over again.
My Peeve –
While I loved Damian, I wish we would have had more from him. We got a few journal entries from him too, but it just wasn’t enough.
I loved it. Love Always, Kate is such an emotional filled book on love, hope and life. It’s hard to read, but it’s beauty will reel you back in. Get comfortable with your tissues, because this one is an emotional ride. I high recommend it though.
