The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

I feel like I have a book crush on Jennifer Armentrout. I was introduced to her from a friend on Goodreads, who screamed at me for a long time to read Lux. (and honestly, that is still my favorite) Admittedly, I haven’t read ALL her books though but it seems like the more I read her books, the more my crush grows. To be honest, I was terrified to read this series because a lot of people have compared it to Vampire Academy. And it is. Like, a lot. I feel like my crush just did something nasty and I am backing away with my hands up. Sad, sad day my friends.

I hate to compare books. But there are times when two are just SO similar it’s crazy. I won’t bore you with just how similar these books are. I don’t really need to. Vampire Academy and Half Blood are two sides to the same coin. Different on the outside, yet bred from the same metal. Whew my metaphors are terrible.

OK. So, similarities aside, I thought Half Blood was awesome. Jennifer is a rock star writer. She has a wild imagination, she’s great at creating real characters that are awesome and equally flawed. The angst and heart pounding action. I am always sucked in. I really don’t know how she does it, but I will read anything she writes.

I loved the mythology in this one. It was fascinating and just fun to learn about. I was a little put off about the way the halfs were treated though. Everyone has something that effects them one kind of way; slavery and discrimination are two of mine. Especially since the halfs were RAISED this way. It’s sad and sickening.

Alex is a pretty bad ass girl. She’s tough, non nonsense and quite funny. She feels responsible for her mother’s death and the turn of events and feels responsible to right that wrong. She is selfless and brave (which makes her equally stupid too) and her love for her friends and mother was admirable.

I liked the slow building attraction/relationship between her and Aiden. I wasn’t put off by their age difference either. Their situation makes for some great angst and tension, but I loved it.ย Aiden is one of those… too perfect gents. Sweet and kind yet hard-core and bad ass. He looks past Alex’s defenses and really gets under her skin. I couldn’t find a single “flaw” in his character. But since he has that “too perfect” persona, that makes him flawed in my eyes. I did appreciate that he didn’t treat the halfs any different.

And just a note, I don’t like nor do I trust Seth. That is all I have to say about him.

Overall- Although the similarities to VA kind of irritated me, I thought this was a well written, interesting read. I got Pure through ARCycling so I am going to read that soon. Jennifer Armentrout fans and fans of mythology will adore this.

Vaguest review… ever.

I do agree that this book was just a bit too similar to Vampire Academy…that was kind of annoying. But aside from those similarities, the book was quite well written, and I like how the plot diverges from VA as the series goes on. I love Aiden! He’s such an amazing character- especially in Elixir (which is from his POV). AND FRICK YES! SETH SUCKS. That is all. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope the series diverts from VA. I have Pure and I am excited to read it! I hope to see more of Aiden as well. It isn’t like I didn’t like him– but.. I don’t know. I have these weird feeling, ya know?

AND LOL about Seth. He is just WEIRD and creeps me out.

That’s good to hear. Really? I love triangle? I don’t mind those but..

LOL Seth must do some stupid shit then, hmm?

I can totally agree with the book crush as I have a huge book crush on her also ๐Ÿ™‚ I agree with the similarities to Vampire Academy in this book but I think that kind of disappears once you read the rest of the series. I just finished Apollyon which was the 4th book and it was amazing!

I can’t wait to see what you think of Pure.

    Great review!

I have been hesitant to start this series for the same reason- being so similar to VA- but so many people have reassured me that Pure takes them in complete opposite directions, so i just need to remind myself of that. And that I love JLA no matter what. LOL. You are right- she is a total rock star! I haven’t even picked up this book and already I don’t like Seth and am completely team Aiden. LOL.

Great review! The mythology of the Covenant series is really well-done. It’s just familiar enough that most people will remember learning about it in school, and detailed enough to satisfy mythology geeks like me! I like that you pointed out that Alex’s good characteristics (bravery, etc) also make her incredibly stupid sometimes. She is RIDICULOUSLY reckless and somehow, people still like her. Even more amazingly, I still like her as a reader. Happy reading!

I have a huge book crush on JLA! Okay, having just read VA, yes, definite similarities in the first book but somehow I didn’t find them as glaring — I thought the mythology aspect set it apart? Anyway, the similarities definitely die off as the series continues — completely different direction! I love love this series so I hope you enjoy!! Also… haha about Seth! I was the exact same way about him!
