Seventeen-year old Sarah’s life is turned upside down when her single mom is sent to jail. She’s forced to move, leaving behind everything she’s ever known, including her best friend Sydney. Lost and bitter in a new school, her one goal is to save money and move back home. Then she meets Angel Moreno.
Enigmatic but gorgeous, Angel is almost too good to be true. Except for one thing, his archaic belief that guys and girls can never be “just friends”. The problem? Sarah’s best friend Sydney is not a girl.
With their unexpected romance intensifying to places neither ever experienced, how long can Sarah keep Angel in the dark about the guy waiting for her back home?
*Pick it for me freebie reads #13. Thanks for voting!*
This review is very late. Like, 8 days. So sue me, ok? Forever Mine was the winner for the Pick it for me freebie reads (#13). This, and 90% of my freebies I place in the poll, I have had this one for a while. Which is funny this won, because I have been on a contemporary kick lately. It’s that weird, how all the books you read set a trend? Anyway, I had high hopes for this book because I have seen quite a few raves about it. Sadly… it didn’t work for me. I had a lot of issues with it and I wasn’t really into the romance.
First of all; Sarah, our main lady. I liked her and i thought she was sweet, funny and I LOVED her dedication to her mother and best friend, Sydney. After her mother goes to jail, she moves in with her Aunt and Uncle but she is determined to move back to Arizona once she’s 18. She had no plans to make friends or get involved with anyone. Until Angel. When things started to get more.. series between the two, she deliberately hid the fact that her best friend was a guy. I’m thinking, WHY because”Who cares if your best friend is a dude!?” well, apparently Angel does. He was very open about that during one of their talks.
Enter Angel. His name is the biggest oxymoron because this guy is a douche. He kind of redeemed himself in my eyes towards the end but he said something so stupid I was wishing for someone to just smack this guy. I know people go for that alpha male, always puffing out their chest and banging on it like a damn cave man but he was awful. He was controlling and really, really possessive. He is so hot-headed, egotistical and stubborn too. At 17. Can you image this punk at 30!? I didn’t see it as sweet and loving. I didn’t see it as “Aw, he is in love and just wants to be around Sarah all.the.time.” He literally tells Sarah she can’t talk to Sydney as often as she was and he still wasn’t “ok” with their friendship. In what situation is this OK?
Now lets talk their relationship. It moved pretty fast. I mean, the initial deal was more or less a hook up. Without the hooking up part. Just play it by ear, see how things go and be monogamous during this time. Sarah made it pretty clear she wasn’t going to stay and had planned to leave. Even with her family and Sydney telling her to stay. I guess I should admit there were a few times I was smiling at their interactions and there was that one thing that Angel did (when he started to redeem himself) that I thought was really sweet. But, I just wasn’t digging it.
There was also this situation with a teacher that was thrown in that I still can’t understand the logic of it. It was literally thrown in there for bring these two back together. How about just having them sit down and talk, hmm? OK, sure they are young and youngins hate to talk and bring LOGIC into situations. Even the follow-up to that situation as a paragraph long.
I did love Angel’s family though. Especially Sofia and Alex. Alex seemed like an older Angel but maybe since we didn’t his douchery all the time it wasn’t so awful. Poor Sofia, having all these crazy guys as brothers. I was happy that her and Sarah became close friends and was able to confide in her. Sarah really needed her too.
My Peeve- I just didn’t like Angel. Really, really didn’t like him. In my opinion, that line between the alpha male and just a controlling, possessive douche was crossed. Yes, all alpha males are this way but this was NOT the healthy kind. The teacher twist too. I just.. don’t like it when a situation is added to a story line just for resolution purposes.
Overall- It was OK. I did smile at a few scenes and I really liked the secondary characters. I just couldn’t really get into the romance, which is huge because this is a romance. I might continue on with these books because I am curious about Alex and Sofia’s story. I don’t really recommend it but I’m not saying DON’T READ IT either. Give it a go and let me know what you think.
