Looks like I am in a rambling mood lately, huh?!
About 4 months ago, give or take, I discovered my love for audiobooks. I know a lot of bloggers/readers that listen to them often, but was worried about how I would be able to connect to the story, characters etc. I am more of a visual learner, not audible.
Of all the audio’s I have listened to, quite a few have been romance. And I always get asked about the more.. “graphic” scenes in them, and if it makes me uncomfortable. In short answer, no. I can see where one would be hesitant though, so below are my thoughts.
I think it boils down to a few different things;
- the type of romance you usually READ ( ie your squirm level)- If you wouldn’t read it, don’t listen to it.
- the narrator
- the writing
- your location
So far, the ones that I have listened to haven’t made me at all uncomfortable. Except for that one time, when I was at work and didn’t know what was about to happen. That was awkward and I haven’t listened to ANY books at work since. (There’s another story below). I have read some pretty racy stuff, and I think since I have read a lot of romance is a factor too. When I first started reading more ADULT romance novels, they did tend to make me squirm and giggle but since then, it’s nothing at all to me.
The writing. Now, there are a handful of authors I can list that write the BEST scenes, and they aren’t awkward at all. Others? It’s just weird as hell and I have been known to skip those scenes, because I find them boring. That’s another topic altogether.
I hope I don’t offended anyone by saying this.. BUT. If you are more conservative, I don’t think listening to hot and steamy romances is in your best interest. It just depends on your comfort level, period. But all in all, you won’t really know until you try it. This is why I like audible.com, because you can sample the books. And if it doesn’t work out, no biggie.
The narrator is a HUGE factor. I read somewhere that the narrator was moaning and crap on the audio. None of books I have read have done that. They will say, “I moaned into his mouth,” or something like that. There have been some though, that do this “hmmm” or” mmm” sound, but people make those noises eating. The one and only thing that has made me raise an eyebrow a time or two, is when it’s a female narrator and the POV is male.
That can get weird.
Where you are and what you are doing, has a HUGE impact as well. That one time at work, yeah. I started looking around like, “Can anyone HEAR THIS!?” And I am pretty sure I was beet red; and I am not one to blush often. Of course, I had headphones in but that’s not the point. Again, when I was driving my kids to the dentist. They were on their Kindles and I thought I would hurry and finish up the book. There had been some sexual tension scenes and some pretty PG-13 ones, but since the book was almost over, I wasn’t expecting them to get it on at the point I was at. Needless to say, I turned it off and put the radio on. Because, that’s not awkward.
What I mean is… if you wouldn’t read it in public, don’t listen to it in public.
I wish I had more rec’s for y’all; the ones that I HAVE listened to are pretty steamy. If you do want steamy though, I recommend the Hard Ink series by Laura Kaye. Plus, the narrator is just great.
Fallen Too Far by Abbi Glines, is a perfect example of an awkward narrator. Her voice is breathy anyway, so image her doing THOSE SCENES.
That leaves us to discuss –
Do you listen to romance on audio?
Do the more.. graphic sex scenes make you uncomfortable?
Have you ever had an awkward moment while listening to an audiobook?
What romance audio books would you recommend?
