Hello, lovies! Another Random Rant post. I know, two in one month. *gasp*
I don’t really have a witty way to start off this post, so I am just gonna dive right in. Also, this is a two-part rant. Disclosure vs spoilers AND HEAs.
This week (now two weeks ago) I have seen, at least 3 different synopsis’ on Goodreads that state, “Don’t worry! They get their HEA.” Or, “Complete with a HEA.” Not only that, I also have had review request that state this as well. I even heard of a time when an author sent an email to the bloggers on a tour that said, “This book is ‘blah blah blah’ but don’t worry! They will get their HEA in book 3” (Not exact quote, because this was MONTHS ago)
I don’t know about you, but that is a freakin spoiler. I don’t necessarily hate spoilers but I don’t like them either. It’s pretty simple– I don’t want to know the end to a book/series before I even decide I want to READ IT. Especially knowing that their love will overcome ALL THE ODDS. What’s the point? I know what happens. I know the ending. So, why waste my time?
Is this a thing? I assume this is targeted to those that ALWAYS want a nice, clean-cut ending, where the two main characters waltz off surrounded by fluffy clouds, rainbows and sunshine. But what about those that don’t? Sure, we as readers generally want a HEA, especially if we are invested in the characters and relationship. And let’s be real here, there are some out there that you can just TELL will end up this way. But to flat-out state that they WILL be together and get their HEA? I don’t understand.
ME? I don’t always want a HEA. I like angst, pain, tense, emotional and realistic freaking endings. And sometimes, shit just doesn’t work out, ya know?
So tell me, how do you feel about full disclosure HEAs? Do you consider it a spoiler? Does it impact whether or not you will read the book? Or even get invested, knowing the outcome?
How do you feel about HEAs overall?
