Random Rants and Rambling #28 | Book Trailers

Random rants
Random Rants and Rambling is a feature here at Lilybloombooks where I.. well, Rant or Ramble about Random topics!

Ya know – it wasn’t until about a year ago I realized that book trailers were a THING. I don’t know if this is a major marketing tool – I mean, I have participated in a few reveals – and I can surely see the appeal and why they are becoming popular.

However, the ones that I have seen are cheesy as all get out – and hardly ever do they get me excited for the book.

Let’s set the cheese factor aside – I already have a THING for faces on book covers or a couple – so when I see a trailer and an actor portrayed as a character, that is who I picture. My memory is scary – with random things that don’t matter – so I will remember THAT face and it’s SO frustrating. (I know, I am weird)

Back to the cheese factor. I feel bad saying this – because I know people work hard on them but c’mon. You have to admit they are cheesy. Honestly, I have found that the best trailers are fan made – and not the actual trailer that was created for the book. Either way……

I just don’t watch em. I don’t get excited for them, and they sure don’t get me excited for the book release – and I now no longer promote them.

COMPLETELY AGREE! First of all, most of them do not have the legal right to the images or music being used in them. Second-I have yet to hear one single person say, “I saw the coolest book trailer video ever and I’m so buying that book!” To me, it’s energy I could use somewhere else when you think of the time involved in producing one. LIKE WRITING. 🙂

Oh yeah, like dream cast crap?! I dislike those too – because like you said, THAT is who you will picture!!!

I don’t really get the whole book trailer thing. Trailers work great for movies because it’s the same medium: it’s a short video about a video. But book blurbs tell me so much more about a book than watching a trailer — I read a book because of the author’s writing, not because of its cinematic appeal. And then there’s the fact that I like to use my own imagination, and some book trailers put faces and settings in my head, so it biases me prior to reading the book.

EXACTLY! It doesn’t make sense to me – but I do see the appeal in marketing from all angles.

Yes me too. I can’t stand it when a “model” or “actor” looks NOTHING like the character described too!

I don’t watch book trailers often either, give me the blurb and cover to decide whether I want to read a book. Now and then I come across a well done trailer that actually makes me curious about the book but often they are pretty cheesy like you said. I also don’t really know who watches book trailers, I often only see a trailer when I am already following the author and am scrolling through facebook or something, else I probably never see the trailer. But then again maybe other book lovers do search for trailers.
