I received this book for free from The Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Since I have been in an ADULT mood lately, I was excited to start Lie by Night. Not only that, but as you know, my love for romantic suspense has been steadily on the rise. Lie by Night had a great mix of mystery, suspense with a dash of romance that I thoroughly enjoyed.
After Emma receives a mysterious note about how to find her brother, Jacob, she sets out to an Island when she runs into someone from both her past, Cole. Cole, is on the hunt for Emma’s brother as well, begrudgingly teams up with Emma to find him, but for his own reasons. Battling their attraction, both Cole and Emma must figure out who to trust.
Although this book was really slow in the beginning and honestly, kinda boring, things get really intense about halfway through. There was a lot going on in Lie by Night, and trying to piece together the mystery behind Jacob’s disappearance and why, was very well written. There was a lot of betrayal going on too; you couldn’t help but bite your nails in anticipation and point fingers at everyone.
Like Jacob’s note said, Trust No One.
Emma is very head strong and brave. Her determination to head into the unknown for clues to her brother’s whereabouts is remarkable. She is very smart too; holding information close to her even after she decided to trust Cole. I understood her hesitations. Since Cole had his own agenda for finding Jacob. Not only that, he actually has reason to believe that Jacob is one of the people behind the operation that has destroyed his family and those closest to him. So yes, I get it.
As far as their relationship goes, this was probably my least favorite aspect of the novel. They knew each other previously before running into each other on the Island, but I didn’t feel the connection. That and their “personal interactions” didn’t flow smoothly and seemed off. I did enjoy those few parts where they talked and got to know each other a little more though.
Overall – I really enjoyed it! The plot was fast paced, with twists and turns thrown in left and right. While the romance wasn’t my favorite, it didn’t stop my overall enjoyment.
