A mistress. A mountain of debt. A mysterious wreck of a building.
Delilah Swanpool, Countess of Derring, learns the hard way that her husband, "Dear Dull Derring," is a lot more interesting—and perfidious—dead than alive. It's a devil of an inheritance, but in the grand ruins of the one building Derring left her, are the seeds of her liberation. And she vows never again to place herself at the mercy of a man.
But battle-hardened Captain Tristan Hardy is nothing if not merciless. When the charismatic naval hero tracks a notorious smuggler to a London boarding house known as the Rogue's Palace, seducing the beautiful, blue-blooded proprietress to get his man seems like a small sacrifice.
They both believe love is a myth. But a desire beyond reason threatens to destroy the armor around their hearts. Now a shattering decision looms: Will Tristan betray his own code of honor…or choose a love that might be the truest thing he's ever known?
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I haven’t read many of Julie Ann Long’s novels, but the few that I have read, I’ve enjoyed immensely. I was all over reading the start of this new series, and happy to say I loved it.
Delilah, having been left with nothing but debt and an old building after the death of her husband, really comes into herself. I resonated with her a lot, simply because finding yourself and your voice is FUN and AMAZING. Seeing her do that made me smile, and adore her so much.
Speaking of adoring, I adored Delilah and Tristan together. They bring out the best in each other. Their flirty banter and sexual chemistry was instant, and I loved every minute of it. The tender moments are some of the best I’ve read, too.
Aside from the romance, I really liked the twist with Mrs. Breedlove and Delilah. These two aren’t… meant to be friendly, but I loved that they were able to find some common ground and learn to care for one another. Strong female friends for the win!
I have to say, this book made me laugh so much. I would be giggling often while reading, and would have to stop a few times to get my bearings. The characters were a riot, and I loved the banter, wit and friendship all around.
Overall – I obviously, loved it. I highly recommend this one for all lovers of Historial Romance – and those new to the genre too!
