I HAVE A PROBLEM.

There has always been a sneaking suspicion that I’ve been a hoarder. I hoard a lot of things (thankfully, I have a large garage, closets and attic) but I have come to the realization that I am a BOOK HOARDER. How did I come to realize this?

Let me explain.

A few weeks ago, I was browsing my shelf to see what books I wanted to use as a Twitter giveaway, in honor of the Memorial Day read-a-thon. I stood at (one) shelf, for about 10 minutes, trying to figure out which books I was wanting/able to part with.

The situation went something like this….

Book 1

Oh, I didn’t care for this one… AND it’s signed. COOL *Puts in pile*

.. Wow I really like the cover though… *puts book back on shelf*

Book 2

Did I even read this? *puts in pile*

….. Yes, I did read that! I think. Well, if not, I should….

*puts back on shelf*

Book 3

*grabs book and stares* I really loved this one though…..

Book 4

Yeah, this one isn’t for me. *opens book* Well damn, it’s signed but has my name in it.

*Puts back on shelf*

Book 5

*Grabs book* Yes, I can part with it. I CAN

*Opens book* SHIT, it has coffee stain. Can’t give that away! (maniacal laughter)

*Puts back on shelf*

…. After book 15

I pretty much came up with some sort of excuse for every book I picked up.

That is just one situation. I ended up not parting with ANY books and did an audio book giveaway in it’s place. I am also a serial series buyer. Example, I found Spirit Bound at Goodwill (in hardcover) and since it was so cheap, I bought it. Now, I am on the hunt to find the remaining books in the series, even though I have read them and will probably never read them again.

I found another book at our library sale, that was book 4 in a series — pretty sure this is a 11 books series, thus far — so what do I do? Browse Bookoutlet, library sales and Goodwill for the remaining books in the series. They don’t even have to MATCH. I just… collect all the books in the series.

Even series that I will probably never get to.

I even forget sometimes that I OWN a book already and purchase another one. I can’t part with them though. I just CAN’T. I will make nice, lovely piles on my shelf to either a) donate or b) use as a giveaway. But I end up putting them back at some point. That’s usually why if you look around my house, there are piles of books everywhere!

So. Clearly, I have a hoarding problem.

I asked my husband if he thought I was a book hoarder and he said,

“Yes. You need a room dedicated to books.” — I LIKE THIS PLAN.

I never used to keep books, but now I’m starting to realize I have issues. A girl in my book club is a librarian and was collecting books for teens for this event she was throwing. I’m like books for teens?? I have a ton of those. And yay for getting more teens to read! But then it was SO hard to part with books. And I don’t reread! I ended up giving her a bunch, but then feeling a twinge of regret at some of them. (like Wintergirls! Why did I give that?). I actually am feeling it right now 🙁 I’m pathetic.

Yes, I have that too! I am always like, “Whyyyyyyyyy did I give that away!?” I tend to end up buying them again anyway LOL

I am so happy to hear I am not alone!! I actually found this cool idea for small bookshelves, and I might do it for my series books!

*points to self* total book hoarder here!

Funny story, last weekend I was sick with strep and I couldn’t go to my clinical so I stayed home and rearranged my bookshelves. My parents and my uncle was at my house watching a race so I thought I’d have a little fun. I asked them how many books they thought I had. My husband said 157…….157!! I laughed a little inside at that HAHA. So I counted my books and my total count, as of right now is…………

    *drum roll please*

    551

Yup, total book hoarder #noregrets 😉

551? Geez. You know, that seems like such a high number but when it comes to books, I just don’t see LOL

Yup, I recently wrote a post on book hoarding as well and it was a harsh realisation when I realised my bookshelf was filled with books I not only hadn’t read, but didn’t want to either! But I am seriously running out of room so I’ve had to just be strict with book donating. It’s hard, but that means my shelf will be filled with books I loved.

Did you? I will have to go read it!

I didn’t pay attention to ones that I “didn’t” want to read, although I am sure there are some! lol

I am a total book hoarder, and have known it for years. Currently I have 11 floor to nearly ceiling bookcases of books. If my mother hasn’t gotten rid of them, I have at least another 10-15 boxes worth of books in her storage space. (Not sure, I’ve been asking her to ship them to me for years and offered to pay. She keeps putting it off. So she might have gotten rid of them already…)

And I’m the same way about parting with any of them! If I’ve had them long enough, even if I didn’t like the book, I can’t make myself give them away. I’ve been telling myself since I started my blog last year, that I would do giveaways. I even have a few new-looking books I’ve picked up to giveaway, as well as some ARCs. And I haven’t done it yet…. *laughs* I haven’t looked at those books at ALL since I decided they weren’t going to stay with me though. Sometimes that helps. And honestly it’s more a laziness/been too busy RL thing that I haven’t set up the giveaways yet. But I know if I don’t do it soon, those books won’t be leaving me either…

I could start to give some away I suppose – but I do buy a lot of bargain books, and some people are finicky about that.

I have books at my mom’s too (or I did, 10 years ago) I wonder if she still has them….

    1. tonyalee

No way is it a problem!! LOL

I am not for that Booksfortrade thing – more power to those that it works for but it’s not for me.

  5. Aneeqah @ My Not So Real Life

I think that I don’t have as big of a problem with book hoarding as most people, mainly because I’m a working student so I try and save most of my money, haha. Plus, my library is fantastic! But, now that I’m really thinking about it, once I DO buy a book, I will pretty much never let go of it. Even if I have no intentions of ever reading it, lol. I’m also a total sucker for Half Price Books, which sells sooo many good YA novels from time to time. I just can’t resist!

Now that you mention it, maybe I AM a book hoarder, haha. I also want a room for my books, that would be cool!! 😀

I think that is where I fall into trouble, is when I find the books on sale. LOL You just can’t pass up a book for $1 or $2, right?! haha

My library is awesome too! I usually go every week and there are times (more often then not) that I don’t even end up reading it!

    1. tonyalee

Looking back, I think I have always had a problem with it. I just didn’t BUY as many.

One thing I didn’t even discuss was eBooks. How often I go to buy a book on sale, only for Amazon to tell me I have it!

    1. tonyalee

Once we finish out basement, the room (the largest too) with the fireplace will be a library! I am excited!

    1. tonyalee

I am pretty sure I have more books that I haven’t read vs read. I thought about making a list (hubby actually suggested I make a spreadsheet so I know what I do have when shopping) but I cannot bring myself to do it!

  6. Wendy @ Book Scents

Firstly — that picture up there, is that your shelves? I love it! Also I was cracking up over your decision making. Yeah, I was trying to cull books back when I only had one bookcase — basically seeing what books I know I won’t read again and would want to donate or whatever. I couldn’t do it. Mostly it’s bc I buy like 100x faster than I read and I have SO many books I haven’t read yet — but want to still. Or books I thought were good but am not sure I’ll reread (but I MIGHT ONE DAY). And then I bought new bookcases soooo… i have lots of room now. 🙂 hahah. I totally get you. also, I do have a room dedicated to books right now. actual conversation I had with E: what if we have more than one kid, what’s going to happen to my book room?! hahahah

Yes, that is my overflow book shelf in my living room! I have one on each side of the fireplace. 😀

This is why Kyle wont allow me to buy another book shelf. He said that (for now) I kind of have a place for them but it would only get worse if I had another shelf.

  7. Belle Wong

Yes, yes and yes! I can so relate to this. I’m definitely a book hoarder too. When we moved from a house in the suburbs to a condo in the cities, I had to part with half–yes, HALF– of my books and it was Just. So. Hard. I still sob when I think about it.
