When Kate Watts abandoned her law career to open a food pantry in Northeast Minneapolis, she never dreamed it would be this difficult. Facing the heartbreaking prospect of turning hungry people away, she is grateful for the anonymous donations that begin appearing at the end of each month. Determined to identify and thank her secret benefactor, she launches a plan and catches Ian —a charismatic hacker with a Robin Hood complex—in the act.
Ian intrigues Kate in a way no man ever has. But after learning he’s snooped around on her personal computer, she demands retribution. Impressed with her tolerance and captivated by her spirit, he complies and begins to slowly charm his way past her defenses. Time spent with Ian is never boring, and Kate soon finds herself falling for the mysterious hacker.
But Ian has enemies and they’re growing restless. In the hacking world, exploiting a target’s weakness is paramount, and no price is too high to stop an attack. And when Kate learns exactly how much Ian has paid, she’ll discover just how strong her love is for the man who has hacked his way into her heart.
Heart Shaped Hack is not a book I knew a thing about before downloading. Which if I were honest, I love finding those random finds and going in blind. But I digress. I enjoyed listening to this one but there was something major that kept me from loving it… maybe even LIKING it.
Ultimately, this is a romance. It’s two people meeting – under odd circumstances, mind you, falling in love, etc. etc. Of course, there are a few things that happen in between but… not really. And the not really part is HUGE.
There’s ZERO plot. It’s legit two people meetings, falling in love, scene after scene of them together plus sex, until the THING at the end. (Which, the THING at the end was drama filled and I LOVED it.) You could put their love story into another story and call it good. Seriously. Yes, I loved Kate and Ian together. Their banter is hilarious and the build up of their romance was fun, hot and just… GOOD. But, I need MORE. I need substance. I need development. The majority of romance novels have a foundation that could survive even if you DID remove the romance (meaning, there’s a PLOT) and I don’t think this could because there is NOTHING ELSE.
I will read the sequel because I have to know how things go for them from here. They are good together. I loved how supportive Kate is, how strong she is; especially considering the shit storm Ian left her in towards the end AND all the secrets that he kept from her. She is also VERY tolerant because there were a few instances where I probably would have punched Ian in the face. It’s a couple that I loved reading about and holy batman, their scenes are HOT.
Now as for the narration. I’m not really sure how to express my thoughts. There were two scenes that Kristin did SO well I was in tears. She really brought out the emotions in Kate very well and I adored that. However, the rest of the book? Just… okay. She isn’t my favorite narrator but she wasn’t the worst, either.
All in all… I’m kind of between MEH and I LIKED IT. I mean, I like Kate and Ian together. As I said, their banter, the humor, and the sex scenes were on point… but it bothers me that that’s all there is. I’m a reader that needs more and Heart-Shaped Hack lacked that. If you’re looking for a fun, quick read then by all means. But. If you are looking for something that has depth, development and hello, a plot, maybe skip this one.

- Have you read Heart-Shaped Hack? If so, what did you think?
- Are you like me and need more substance to your romance novels?
