Lori Adams gives New Adult a haunting paranormal twist with the first novel of The Soulkeepers, a series that blends ancient legends and new myths with an enchanting mix of thrills, humor, and high drama.

When Sophia St. James learns that she’ll be moving from Los Angeles to a podunk town somewhere in Connecticut for her senior year of high school, she isn’t expecting an otherworldly encounter. But there is more to Haven Hurst than meets the eye: it’s home to a family of Guardian Angels, and she is the only one who can see them in spirit form. Sophia soon realizes she wants to see much more of Michael, an irresistible yet volatile Guardian who seems drawn to her too.

As Michael battles his forbidden desire for the beautiful young newcomer, one of Hell’s most notorious Demon Knights arrives. Handsome and charismatic, Dante has come to claim the reincarnated soul of his lost lover trapped in Sophia. Cursed with the demon of Persuasion living inside him, Dante will use his seductive charms to lure Sophia into a dangerous game that ends with the kiss of death—unless Michael, who has captured Sophia’s heart, can now capture her soul

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I didn’t finish this book and other that the strong start and Dante, I don’t have many nice things to say either. I made it to 76% before I just couldn’t do it anymore. I know, that is pretty far to just give up, so what’s another 24%, right? RIGHT!? A LOT.

The whole Angel-Demon thing has always been difficult for me. Not just Angel books or just Demon books. I am talking those that have Angels/Demons together in the same world. Where we have these beautiful, celestial beings protecting humankind, saving their souls and escorting them HOME. All the while, the demons get off on pain and well, evilness. I just… I am one of those that believes what you do makes you good or evil. Not what you are.

So now you’re thinking, “SO, why did you read this?” Easy. That first sentence in the synopsis. “Lori Adams gives New Adult a haunting paranormal twist with the first novel of The Soulkeepers, a series that blends ancient legends and new myths with an enchanting mix of thrills, humor, and high drama.” I have been on the hunt for a New Adult novel that is Paranormal and honestly, Forbidden does sound pretty awesome.

Yeah…..This is not New Adult. I can’t tell you, now many Young Adult clichès this book contains. Let’s just narrow it down to, A LOT.

Then going in, I see it’s over 400 pages. Okay, no big deal. Just that now, I was sitting there thinking, “Either this is going to be super long and full of drama, or there is some serious complexity to the world.” Whelp, we get both.

I actually really enjoyed the beginning, er first 25%(ish), of the book. I loved the world building. It’s very unique and the writing was pretty good (key word, was). I was never overwhelmed with info dump–until later on, and HOLY BATMAN. This wasn’t my really my issue. My issues, inlay with the inconsistencies. Things started to contradict what we were originally told. Also, these characters. I could not tolerate a single one.

Let’s start with this Michael fellow. He’s an ass hole. A controlling, angry piece of celestial goodness, with the looks thing going on too *eye roll*. He is confused now, because he has this sudden attraction to Sophia that is Forbidden, because heaven forbid you get a little horny but it’s OKAY that you get angry, and get all up in people’s face and yell at people. All.The.Time–

He shoves me aside and stands up, yelling down. “No more questions, Sophia! Stay away from me!”

“I said stay away! Do you understand me?” he yells.

(Quotes from uncorrected egalley)

How about hell to the no. In no way, is it ever okay to shove a woman and yell her in face. This was in the same paragraph. There was so much more where that came from. AND HE IS AN ANGEL?! *huffs* Not like that really makes a difference, it’s never okay, regardless of who/what you are.

Not only that, things get a little more complicated when Dante arrives. See, Dante wants Sophia’s soul because she harbors his lost lovers soul, some reincarnation crap. Anyway. So, now he is all jealous and even more pissy because she is hanging around him. Even going so far as to get IN HER FACE and demand she stay away from him. Wait, now. Jealousy is a no-no, a HUMAN emotion that is just not okay. In turn, pisses him off more. He LIES, shields his emotions from his family and goes about his merry way.

Here is where this is a problem. Jealousy is said to be a human emotion. So is desire. But isn’t love, hate, happiness, anger and all those other emotions, human emotions, too? How can you feel love, if you don’t feel hate? You talk about balance here, GOOD vs EVIL, YIN & YANG, but you can’t HATE if you can’t feel LOVE. How can you only label certain emotions as human, but not others? I see where she was going, the whole 7 deadly sins. HOWEVER. Anger= Wrath. Confidence can equal to Pride. So, don’t sit here and tell me that angels are forbidden to feel human emotions, and are considered FALLEN if they do, when pretty much every emotion is HUMAN. Also, he is an over-confident, angry ass hole that LIES.

Speaking of the FALLEN. We get the lore about them. How they have fallen from HIS grace because of their LOVE for humans, blah blah blah. But it is also mentioned that they are forbidden to return to their human form. BUT.. about 200 pages later, one is summoned and takes human form. How can you put stipulations on a FALLEN ANGEL, for one. If these Angels are no longer apart of whatever it was they were doing in the first place, you can’t police them. And if you do, WHY would a Fallen take on human form, knowing that he could he hunted down? Wouldn’t they fear the WRATH of those Angel’s that police them? I mean, what in the every living flip.

Seems like these Angels love to make ALL THE THINGS Forbidden. Putting stipulations on beings/people that they should no longer care about.

I just don’t see how these Angels are forbidden to feel “human” emotion when they laugh (happy), get pissed off (anger, duh) love their family (wait, I thought they couldn’t love?!) Point is, these Angel’s should have been stoic, walking beings. Feeling NO emotion, whats so ever. Not a big happy family that protects and loves each other. If this was a restriction on humans, SAY SO. It wasn’t one of those where it’s Forbidden to LOVE and DESIRE a human. Those emotions were forbidden as a whole.

My point is– You have an enemy, the Demons. Do you not hate your enemy? Again, hate=anger=wrath. Which correct me if I am WRONG, is a big no-no. Again, you can’t hate something if you aren’t allowed to feel love. Where is the balance?!

I am getting sidetracked here. Let’s go back to the characters. Sophia. OY. I liked her at first. Beings that her dad is a pastor and they traveled a lot, I felt for her. She never stayed in one place long enough to really make friends. Take into account her Mother passing and the lack of answers from her Father. Then, we get some details about the abusive relationship she was in. And has scars to prove it. It’s sad, it sucks and my heart went out to her. But really? She is one of the dumbest people. Ever. You have a group of guys whose names are Michael, Gabe and Raph. Helloooooooo. Not to mention, after she finds out about Micheal, she still doesn’t have a flippin clue about Dante. How are you THAT stupid? Balance people. ALWAYS balance.

Aaaaaaaaand then, falls in lurrrrve with Michael. What? WHY?

Okay, yes I know why because of things I wont debate here, but still. Let’s demoralize yourself and fall for someone who yells IN YOUR FACE, makes you feel small, tells you what to do and then later, makes you keep your relationship a secret, because he is breaking ALL THE RULES. No, just.. NO.

Anyway. She is has this weird relationship with her dad. He is mopey, distant and lacks some serious parenting skills. Hello, your daughter was hit several times by this guy and you don’t comfort her, nor are you actually there for her. (If there was comforting going on, it was minimal and went right over my head. And mind you, I didn’t finish the damn book). I at least assumed he would do going that, “you must forgive” bologna. Nope. I also may be going on assumptions again here, but why isn’t this girl more religious? Why isn’t HE? I have met some people whom are children of pastors and they are either holier than thou or completely rebellious. Not just, meh. But again, I won’t get into that.

Her friends are the most immature, idiotic people around. You can only use boredom as an excuse for so long, before you must admit that your are just lame. They act like they’re 10, not 16 or whatever age they are. Ridiculous.

Lets move on.

One thing I did enjoy, and why there is a HALF STAR added to that ONE, was the world as a whole but especially the Demons. Yes, I see the irony in that. It was very complex and unique but I was drowning. Everything else just ruined it.

I did skim the rest of the book, searching for a few passengers to get my answers. I found out why Dante was after her dad, which makes me feel a little bad about what I said about him before. Okay, noo, not really. Because even though he did this THING, he’s a shitty parent. I didn’t catch on to what Sophia is, because we know she is something; or she is just special. But, yeah, don’t care.

Overall- Nope. As you can see, I wasn’t a fan. Although Forbidden offers something unique and interesting, it is full of contradictions and unlikeable characters. I may be reading into things too much, but it’s what I do. I must be the lone wolf here, because this has pretty good ratings so far.
