Humanity has colonized on a tidally locked planet known as Pendomus, a planet of extremes. Half eternal scorching desert and half perpetual arctic night. Surviving along the temperate band between the two, we’ve set up home in a complex known as the Helix. Within the Helix lies a highly sophisticated, highly technological society functioning solely on humans fulfilling their life’s purpose. That purpose is determined and nurtured through a person’s natural aptitudes, as read by their daily brain scans. Eating, sleeping, even procreation is handled by professionals. These basic concepts, no longer a part of society’s every day norm.

Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem longs to be more than part of the Helix machine. Her life inside is anything but fulfilling. She feels disconnected, and longs to be more than society dictates. Inside, no one socializes, no one interacts in a meaningful way. It’s never set right with Runa. She would love nothing more than to reach out to her family, but not even her own mother can show any semblance of love for her. Instead, Runa has found solace in the ancient woods nearby, despite being strictly forbidden.

Runa’s life takes an unforeseen turn when she’s brutally attacked, and left for dead in those woods near the Helix. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she’s immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived. Fueled by a yearning to belong, and an attraction she didn’t even know was possible, Runa wants desperately to make a new life. Yet, there’s much she doesn’t know about herself, about the planet and the forces controlling her from afar.

What she needs is some answers.

Aside from the pretty cover– oh c’mon admit it, this cover is AMAZING–  this book caught my eye because of its premise. It just sounded so… so interesting. With a promise of adventure, action and mystery, I couldn’t wait to dive right in.

Having always been different, in obvious ways like her appearance but also with her curiosity and drive be outside the Helix. Runa is brutally attacked shortly after her decision to the leave, waking up in pain and disoriented. She is thrust into a whole new world where people have survived outside the Helix. With changes at every corner and new feelings surface, Runa, with the help of a few new friends, searchers for answers.

The world building and lore behind Pendomus was unbelievable. Carissa has such a vivid imagination and the details she painted for us was so remarkably done. Helix, a “compound” for the humans that have survived Pendomus, has top-notch technology and the depths of the control makes for one terrifying place to live. I mean, they control everything. EVERYTHING. I loved that this was a cross between fantasy and sci-fi. It’s always fun to see what angle the author is going to take the story and Pandomus was pretty different and fascinating. I also thought the underlining meaning of the book was beautiful. There is a difference between living and surviving.

Told from both from Runa’s and Trae’s POV, we get to see how Runa is adjusting to living outside the Helix, her trials and triumphs. And with Trae, we see his internal battle with himself to walk away and how’s he lived outside the Helix. Runa is brave, determined and very head strong. She always knew she was different– just not HOW different. She is very curious about the world outside the Helix and I thought she took everything pretty well. Her search for answers leads to several twists and turns and I was pretty floored. There’s a lot to learn about Pendomus and Runa. Trae, having living outside the Helix for years, is the person that rescues Runa after her attack. He’s strong, smart, yet is determined to keep Runa at arm’s length regardless of his feelings. Having grown up in the Helix and witnessing a few horrific things, he knows the full-scale in which the Helix operates. Their feelings for each other developed a little too fast for my liking, but the chemistry was there and I can’t wait to see more of these two in the future.

We also have Fenton and Kani, two others that live outside the Helix with Trae. Kani was difficult to like at first. I understood her hesitations about Runa and her fear, but she came off a little too strong. Fenton, was probably the hardest character to “understand”. He fakes an accent, thinking it was more or less “cool” and it was really hard to figure out what he was saying. I was hoping for more… about all the other characters. So, here’s hoping for more in the sequel.

My Peeve- Hmm, well, it took a while to figure out exactly WHAT was going on. We are given small details here and there and the story progresses, but not the full background until the end. The ending left me with SO MANY questions about what was going on.

Overall- I really enjoyed it! Pendomus is well done weave of fantasy and sci-fi, with remarkable world building that was just fascinating. Full of action and mystery, Pendomus is a wild ride full of twist and turns that will keep you engrossed until the end. I recommended it!
