Cricket Thompson's lifetime of overachieving has paid off: she's headed to Brown University in the fall, with a spot on the lacrosse team and a scholarship that covers almost everything. Who knew living in the dorm cost money? An Ivy League education seems to mean living at home for the next four years.
When Cricket is offered the chance to earn enough cash to afford a real college experience, she heads back to Nantucket for the summer. But the faraway island challenges Cricket in ways she hadn't anticipated. It's hard to focus on earning money for next year, when she finds her world opening up in entirely new ways-to art, to travel, and, most unexpectedly, to a future completely different from the one she has been working toward her whole life. A friendship blossoms with Ben, the gorgeous surfer and bartender who encourages Cricket to be free, even as she smarts at the pain of seeing Zack, her first love, falling for her worst enemy.
But one night, when Cricket finally lets herself break all her own rules, she realizes she may have ruined her carefully constructed future with one impulsive decision. Cricket must dig deep to fight for her future, discovering that success isn't just about reaching goals, but also about listening to what she's been trying to ignore-her own heart.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If you saw my review for Nantucket Blue, you would know that it wasn’t a ME book. I pride myself it taking steps away from my normal, and reading something that doesn’t usually appeal to me. Which is why I went ahead and snagged up Nantucket Red. I’m glad I did! I really liked it!

Nantucket Red starts off at the end of “last” Summer, with Cricket heading into her senior year and things still rocky with Jules. But within the first 4 chapters, the whole year is summed up and we are taken back to Nantucket for Summer fun before Cricket heads off to college. There are a few things that happen in between, of course, with the break up of Cricket and Zack and her acceptance into Brown, just to name a few.

What bothered me the most in Nantucket Blue was the idolize of Nina, Jules mom, taking so much precedence in the whole book. Which was the intention, I’m sure. So when we get back to more Nina, I thought I would dislike that angle being thrown back in. But it was so different here in Nantucket Red. Cricket finds a list that Nina had written after college, and she uses that to feel connected to her again. But what she does is find herself. Cricket has really grown up and come into her own, and I loved every minute of it.

Cricket has grown a lot over the course of these 2 years. It’s one of my favorite aspects of these books. As we get older, we change, we want different things and I love how Leila captured that.

I didn’t care for her relationship with Zack before, but for some reason, the whole situation tugged at the heart-strings. I wasn’t a fan of the “pause” scenario. You just don’t push PAUSE, like your life is movie, but I understood why Cricket would want to hold off. Yet, in the same token, if that were the case, then she shouldn’t have been surprised that he moved on. Anyway, there is more to all that.

Overall –

Nantucket Red is the perfect Summer read. This book captures the beauty of finding yourself, growing up and best of all, family and love.

I really enjoy summer contemporary books, you actually said it best with “last summer”. They are great summer reads and there is just something about them I can’t get enough of. Nantucket Red sounds like something I would like. Great post and thank you for the chance!
