Eleven months after the father of sixteen-year-old Blaire Adams vanished without a trace, he's found wandering outside The Scripps Research Institute vomiting blood and speaking gibberish, his sole possession a worn leather diary filled with an unrecognizable language. He has a message for her.

As he dies in her arms, he claims he never vanished. She vanished.

In a nearby military quarantine zone, scientists are being called in from around the world to sequence a previously unknown strain of DNA. Scientists…and soldiers.

When her father’s autopsy reveals a rare chromosomal disorder—a disorder, it turns out, she inherited—Blaire begins to suspect her father’s last words weren’t induced by amnesia. Like her dad, she has an additional set of instructions in her genes—instructions for what, doctors can’t say. Only one thing is certain: it’s what killed him…and it will kill her too.

But now she’s haunted by prophetic nightmares of the Yellowjacket—a young murderer, eyes the black of charcoal, who lures his victims to suicide without ever paying them a visit. The only clue she has to his handiwork is a lingering feeling of déjà vu. That, and the nagging suspicion that all she knows is a mirage. She is certain of two things—though it may mean confiding in the wrong side of good and evil, he has the answers she needs.

And he is recruiting her.

I received this book for free from The Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This book is honest to goodness, one of these hardest reviews to write. For many reasons. One; I literally just finished yet my brain in fried. On full overload. And I can’t figure out what in the blazes just happened. Two; there is a LOT happening in this book. And I mean, a LOT. I can’t even touch on this book even a little without spoiling anything. Therefore, this review will probably be vague. And probably incoherent. Deal.

To say this book is complex would be an understatement. I don’t know how much of what was explained is real or made up, aside from the obvious (I am NOT a science person and I tend to be gullible) But either way, holy batman on research and creativity. I loved the science aspect mixed in with the philosophical parts. Everything intertwines together and I loved how THIS was executed. My mind = blown.

This book is surprising in more than one way. The complexity of it. Once I started to get the hang on things, more would happen and more would have to be explained. I wasn’t at all fond of the way this was handled though. I dislike info dump– and we get it in truck loads with Broken Symmetry. I was confused, a lot. I had to re read, a lot. This is definitely a book you have to PAY.ATTENTION to and not be distracted. Also, there were quite a few twists thrown in that I hadn’t seen coming. I was questioning everything, everyone and would sit and think about the book for hours between reading.

I had issue in the beginning of the book though. For the first… 20%, I couldn’t even see where the book was going. I didn’t see a feasible plot, aside from her finding her Dad. Things start to clear up and move along, which I am thankful for. But again, it’s really fast paced and insane.

Blaire was really hard to like at first. I slowly warmed up her though. She is smart, loving but arrogant and bratty at the same time. I was loving the romance in the book. Of course, Daiman was not the best of guys but again, I warmed up to him to. Especially towards the end when things started to make more sense and everything was coming to light. As for everyone else, I can’t… I can’t even. HELLO CONFLICTION, nice to see you again.

My Peeve~ Aside the fact that I was confused as all get out; I had a lot of questions left unanswered. Whether this was the intention or not, is anyone’s guess.

Overall- This book is brilliant. It’s complex, confusing but so interesting. I can’t wait to see what Dan brings us next. I highly recommend this one.
