“Even being dead isn’t enough to get you out of maths class.

Dying wasn’t on sixteen-year-old Riley Richardson’s to-do list. And now, not only is she dead, but she’s stuck in a perpetual high school nightmare. Worse still, she’s stuck there with the geekiest, most annoying boy in the history of the world, ever.

In a school where the geeks are popular and just about everything is wrong, Riley has become an outcast. She begins a desperate quest to get back home, but her once-perfect life starts to unravel into something not nearly as great as she thought it was. And maybe death isn’t really that bad after all…

Welcome to Afterlife Academy, where horns are the norm, the microwave is more intelligent than the teachers, and the pumpkins have a taste for blood.”

After discovering this through the cover reveal, I immediately added it. It sounds so fascinating and I was excited to get my hands on this. There was so much to this book then what I was expecting!

This is a teens worse nightmare! After dying, Riley discovers that she is to attend The Afterlife Academy, before moving on in her After Life, where she must continue her education in a less… tradition way. Much to her chagrin, she discovers that she is not alone; that Anthony, the class “nerd” is right there with her. She soon discovers there is more going on then she initially assumed and is determined to get home.

I loved the setting. The eerie undertones of the place was perfect. Everything was void of color; making the place and people grey. The ever-present fog. And knowing that if you were to choose to walk off those grounds, you would have NO WHERE to go. Not to mention; even when your “graduate,” you don’t know exactly where you go. Really creepy. There were other small paranormal aspects thrown in, that I thoroughly enjoyed. The biting pumpkin (I want one, just sayin)

Throughout the entire story; Riley is constantly struggling. To understand what happened. With Denial.Guilt.Sadness.Regret She stands outs at the academy; beings she isn’t muted in any way. Keeping her natural skin tones, brown hair and colorful jewelry, she quickly becomes the outcast. I hate to admit it; but watching her struggle with this was amusing and quite entertaining. It’s obvious from the start, she was NOT a nice person, actually she was quite NASTY while living, so seeing her get a dose of her own medicine and watching karma show her face was necessary. I felt sorry for her at the same time though. Her stubbornness and devotion (however misguided) to Wade were her best and worst character trait. I just wanted to SHAKE her! Of course, it was admirable too, that she would have such love and devotion to her family and friends.

I really liked Anthony. I thought he would hold more a grudge against Riley, or at least be a little more bitter about it, but he wasn’t. Sure, he had a few harsh things to say, and had NOTHING nice to say about Wade but he was always there. He was Riley’s backbone throughout it all, which goes to show how awesome he really is. I thought their slow build up to friendship, then more, was just so sweet.

Overall~ I really enjoyed this! I wish we could have discovered more about the Academy and the Afterlife itself though. This is more a story of forgiveness, redemption and accepting the cards you’ve been dealt. If there is a sequel, I’ll be there.
