A spine-tingling tale of steampunk and spies, intrigue and heart-racing romance!
When Katharine Tulman's inheritance is called into question by the rumor that her eccentric uncle is squandering away the family fortune, she is sent to his estate to have him committed to an asylum. But instead of a lunatic, Katharine discovers a genius inventor with his own set of rules, who employs a village of nine hundred people rescued from the workhouses of London.
Katharine is now torn between protecting her own inheritance and preserving the peculiar community she grows to care for deeply. And her choices are made even more complicated by a handsome apprentice, a secretive student, and fears for her own sanity.
As the mysteries of the estate begin to unravel, it is clear that not only is her uncle's world at stake, but also the state of England as Katharine knows it. With twists and turns at every corner, this heart-racing adventure will captivate listeners with its intrigue, thrills, and romance.
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The Dark Unwinding appealed to me because of the setting and dash of mystery I got from the synopsis. I honestly haven’t seen much of this book – or narrator – and I was nervous excited when the audio landed in my mailbox.
Historical, steam-punk elements (kind of ), a romance and a mystery surrounding an estate? Uh, yes please. And I ate it up!
Katherine was a fabulous character. I love characters that are brazen, tough and speak their mind – and Katherine was just that and more. She is head strong and smart; and the interactions with the staff, especially her Uncle, were some of the best parts of this book! Uncle Tully was one of my favorite characters as well.
Maybe this was because I was listening to the book rather than reading, but there were times when the book had a paranormal vibe going on. I honestly couldn’t tell if there was some sort of paranormal aspect or if Katherine had more in common with her Uncle than she thought! I also loved the many twists and turns. There was truly never a dull moment.
As for the romance? Well, there is a budding one and I do wish there had been a little bit more. I adored Lane. He is protective of Uncle Tully and genuinely cares about his well-being and those that have made the property their home. It was hard at times to get a full read on Lane – and whether or not what he was doing was real but that added to overall enjoyment.
Fiona brought this book to life. She did a remarkable job with all the characters, especially with Uncle Tully and Mary (Katherine’s maid/friend). This is the first book I have listened to that she has narrated but it will most definitely not be my last.
Overall – I really liked it! Highly recommend this one!
