Reading Challenges: 2016 Debut Author Challenge

In the kingdom of Lovero, nine rival Families of assassins lawfully kill people for a price. As a highly skilled member of one of these powerful clans, seventeen-year-old Lea Saldana has always trusted in the strength of her Family. Until she awakens to find them murdered and her home in flames. The Da Vias, the Saldanas’ biggest enemy, must be responsible—and Lea should have seen it coming. But her secret relationship with the Da Vias’ son, Val, has clouded her otherwise killer instinct—and given the Da Vias more reason than ever to take her Family down.

Racked with guilt and shattered over Val’s probable betrayal, Lea sets out to even the score, with her heart set on retaliation and only one thought clear in her mind: make the Da Vias pay.

With shades of The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet, this richly imagined fantasy from debut author Sarah Ahiers is a story of love, lies, and the ultimate vengeance.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

My thoughts

Oh little book, you at me at The Godfather meets Romeo and Juliet
There are many, many things I truly enjoyed about Assassin’s Heart. The characters, plot twists, revenge story line. But what I love most about it was the world where families worship a Death Goddess and legal assassinations are a nightly occurrence. Why? It makes you THINK. Not to mention, the strong, powerful message(s) about family.

Lea was such an amazing character. There were times when yes, I was frustrated with her because, reasons, but this makes her so much more likable. She makes mistakes. MANY mistakes. And some of those have major consequences. I understood her mindset to seek revenge for her family, and the betrayal she felt. I also loved her arrogance and strong personality. She grew so much throughout the book, and I admire her character for all the things she went through and done.

The other characters as well, had so many complex layers to them. I loved how Les challenges Lea and her beliefs. I admired Marcello, and his decisions he made as well. I even understand why Val did the things he did. Each character, whether good or bad, was written beautifully. I also really loved the romance, but won’t go into many details about THAT.

I will admit, the beginning is a bit slow, but once things really getting moving along, there is never a dull moment. It’s action packed, unpredictable and just.. good. If you are looking for something different; with an interesting world, setting and amazing characters, I highly recommend Assassin’s Heart.

This is the second time today that I’ve seen this book. Though I didn’t really pay attention the first time I saw it this morning, but now i’m like you. You had me at Godfather meets Romeo & Juliet. So now you have me intrigued and I’m on board with this one.

Oh and I started cracking up when you said Lea annoyed you “because reasons” because holy crap do you know how many times I hear that about EVERYTHING from my teenager? LOL Anyway. Glad you really liked this one and you’ve made me want to get it a try!!

Well, childish behavior aside, I couldn’t say because of spoilers!!!

YAY!! I hope you get to read it soon and love it!
The characters are all really great – especially discovering about their motives and stuff!

Yesss it is AWESOME that you liked it! I mean, who would not like a book that has a character with my name in it? Sure, I’ve heard this character isn’t very nice, but still. Anyways, the worshipping of a Death Goddess reminds me of one of the side quests in Skyrim, a video game I used to play. SO THAT IS INTERESTING. Ok I will stop rambling now about video games and my name.

Thanks for the review Tonya! I want to get to this, and I was a little hesitant at first, but not anymore!
