A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

We Were Liars instantly caught my eye once it was available on Netgalley. I am a huge fan of mysteries, and this sounded like something I would thoroughly enjoy. Which I did. I just didn’t love it as much as I was hoping to.

First of all, the writing is beautiful. There is no other way to describe it. I was instantly hooked and read this in one sitting. Her writing is smooth, nicely paced and her prose is one that sets itself apart. In the same light, I think since I read this so fast in one sitting, and so quickly, I missed a few of the clues that would have led to figure out the later twist.

I am usually a more character driven person, and typically with mysteries, the sole focus is what is going on around the characters, not them individually. This causes a slight disconnect for me, since I am more invested in figuring out what is going on. Which is exactly what happened here. Still, my overall enjoy surpasses that.

As far as the plot goes; it’s really hard to discuss without spoilers, so I wont even get into the nitty-gritty. I did figure out the initial twist, it was clear as day and there were many context clues throughout the book. What I didn’t catch onto was what happened. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be a “twist” at all, but I couldn’t for the life of me, figure out what happened that night.

My peeve –

Nothing. There wasn’t  anything specific that kept me from enjoying for nagged at me.

Overall –

I thoroughly enjoyed We Were Liars. E. Lockhart is definitely an author I will be reading again, her writing is amazing. I highly recommend it.
